Dear Senator,
Thank you for passing the Senate Motion, on 2 February 2016, recognising that thousands of children are being harmed by Australia’s current family law system, and that a new, non-adversarial system is needed. My family, along with many others in our electorate, are grateful.
Please could you let me know how this major issue of child welfare – and of children’s rights – can now be advanced, and how the government can be encouraged to expedite essential changes.
Many children and families are currently being deeply harmed as a result of our slow, adversarial and unaffordable family court system. This harm is avoidable and must be stopped urgently.
There are alternatives, and I encourage you to review the recommendations of the recently launched “Children in Crisis” paper (at familylawreformcoalition.org) and of the federal Government’s own 2003 report “Every Picture Tells a Story”, both of which recommend a new, non-adversarial system for the majority of family separations.
Australia’s family courts deal with 200,000 adults a year, according to Family Court CEO Richard Foster at this year’s Senate Estimates. Remarkably, though, the Family Court has no idea how many children are affected by its decisions, but the number must be huge. I look forward to hearing your plans for helping save these children, and thousands in our electorate, from the great and avoidable harm to which they are currently exposed.
Yours faithfully,
[your name]
